Agios Andreas (Άγιος Ανδρέας) Evrytania

Agios Andreas is a settlement and seat of the homonymous local community, of the municipal unit and municipality, municipality of Karpenisi, of the regional unit (former prefecture) of Evrytania, in the region of Central Greece, according to the Kallikratis program.[1][2]

Before the Kapodistrias plan and the Kallikratis program, it belonged to the province and prefecture of Evrytania, in the geographical department of Central Greece.[3][4]

Geography

Agios Andreas is located in the eastern part of the prefecture, on the southeastern slopes of Mount Koniskos (between Tymfristos and Kaliakouda), north of the small river Mega Rema and at an average elevation of 1,000. It is approximately 8 km south of Karpenisi. The local community is classified as a rural mountainous settlement, with an area of ​​5.787 km² (2011).[3][4][5][6]

Administrative changes until "Kallikratis"

The settlement was recognized in 1836 and belonged to the prefecture of Acarnania and Aetolia. In 1899 it passed to the prefecture of Evrytania and in 1909 to the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania. In 1943 it was definitively subordinated to the prefecture of Evrytania

With the Government Gazette 244A - 04/12/1997 the settlement was detached from the community of Agios Andreas and annexed to the municipality of Karpenisi

Historical information

Agios Andreas was the birthplace of the friendly and fighter Athanasios Karpenisiotis, who pioneered the revolution of Moldavia-Wallachia and lost his life in a battle in Skouleni in the area of ​​Proutho, in June 1821.[8] Also, on the night of June 19, 1821, the rebels who had left the besiegers of Karpenisi gathered in Agios Andreas.[9]
