Administrative Region : Central Greece
Regional unit : Evrytania
Pappadia (Παππαδιά) Evrytania
Pappadia is a mountainous village in the prefecture of Evrytania at an altitude of 800 meters[2].
Geography - History
Pappadia is located on the western slopes of Tymfristos (Velouchi) and west of the Tavropos River (Megdovas). It is built on the Karpenisi - Neraida provincial road in an area full of fir trees with a view of the peaks of Agrafa[3]. It is located 24.5 km southwest of Karpenisi and 2 km northwest of Pavlopoulos[4]. The village's landmark is the church of Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos. It is a stone-built church with a narthex, a four-pitched roof made of slate slabs and frescoes dating from the 17th century. It is a typical example of the ecclesiastical architecture and painting of the region and has been designated, since 1997, a historical monument, with a 50-meter protection zone around it[5].
In May 1809, on the homonymous mountain Papadia at an altitude of 1,514 meters, Kostas Lepeniotis fought and massacred 300 Turk-Albanians led by Dervenagas Suleiman Totis. He thus avenged the arrest and martyrdom by Ali Pasha of his brother Katsantonis and Giorgos Chasiotis[6].
Name - Administrative
The old name of the village, until 1927, was Ternovo, when it was renamed Pappadia and initially belonged to the community of Stenomato and the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania[7]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Pavlopoulos, it forms the local community of Pavlopoulos, which belongs to the municipal unit of Karpenisi of the Municipality of Karpenisi and according to the 2011 census has a population of 21 inhabitants[8].
