Agios Andreas (Άγιος Ανδρέας ) Rethymno
Agios Andreas is a settlement in the Community of Gonia, Municipality of Rethymno[1] in the Regional Unit of Rethymno, Crete. According to the 2011 census, its population is 203 permanent residents.[2]
General and historical information
Agios Andreas is built at an altitude of 215 meters and is located 11 kilometers southwest of the city of Rethymno[3]. In 1881, according to the Ottoman census of that year, it had a population of 275 inhabitants, the majority of whom were Muslim (specifically, 250 Turkish Cretans lived in the village compared to 25 Greeks[4]).
In 1894, according to an estimate by the Greek army officer Nikostratos Kalomenopoulos, there were sixty Turkish families and six Greek families living in Agios Andreas[5]. A few years later, the 1900 census conducted by the Cretan State found only 19 residents in Agios Andreas (17 Muslims and 2 Christians)[6].
Administratively, with the creation of the Ottoman municipalities in 1879, it was subordinated to the municipality of Atsipopoulos in the province of Rethymno[4]. After the incorporation of Crete into the Greek state, it remained in the province of Rethymno as a settlement of the community of Gonia, while according to the Kapodistrian administrative division, it was subordinated from 1997 to 2010 to the municipal district of Gonia in the municipality of Nikiforos Fokas. Since 2011 it has been part of the Kallikratiko municipality of Rethymno.
Ecclesiastically it belongs to the parish of Gonia of the 2nd archiepiscopal region of the Holy Metropolis of Rethymno and Avlopotamos and has two churches, which are dedicated to Saint Andrew and the Holy Spirit[7], where there is a plaque built in for the massacred residents of the village of Plaka, which existed at this point, by the Turks in 1770.[8][9]
Transportation
There is a bus connection from Rethymno to Kyrianna with intermediate stops in Saint Andrew and Athanatos.
