Velonado (Βελονάδον) Rethymno

Velonado (official: Velonadon) is a semi-mountainous village in the Community of Mountros[1] of the Municipality of Rethymno in the Regional Unit of Rethymno, Crete, at an altitude of 380 meters.[2]

Geography - Sights

Velonado is located towards the border with the Regional Unit of Chania, 30 km. SW. from the city of Rethymno (via Pyrgos) and 8 km. SE. from Argyroupoli. The area where the village is built is characterized by the surrounding hills and the gorges that form between them. To the west it borders Vilandredo, from which it is separated by the homonymous gorge, and to the northeast with Mountros, from which it is separated by the "Moundriano gorge". These two gorges (Viladendrou or Velonado and Moundriano) are referred to by the locals as "Kollitas" due to the short distance between them, separated by the Nissiani hill and joined next to the settlement of Kato Poros.[3] The natural beauty and environment of the area lend themselves to hiking trails. The Argyroupoli - Moundros - Agouseliana route is part of the European path E4 and passes through Velonado.[4]

Administrative

It was officially mentioned as a settlement in 1925 in the Government Gazette 27A - 31/01/1925 to be annexed to the then community of Arolithiou[5]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Moudros they form the local community of Moudros, which belongs to the municipal unit of Nikiforos Fokas of the Municipality of Rethymno and according to the 2011 census has a permanent population of 88 residents.[6]
