Stefaniada (Στεφανιάς) Karditsa
Stefaniada or Stefanias is a settlement in Thessaly and the Regional Unit of Karditsa.[1][2]
General - Historical information
Stefaniada is located on the eastern slopes of Mount Galatsi in the Western Agrafa at an altitude of 960 meters.[1] It is approximately 82 km W.-S.W. from Karditsa and 26 km. S.-S.W. from Anthiro (the seat of the municipality).
The village existed before the Ottoman invasion of Western Thessaly (in 1395) and is mentioned in the census of 1454–55 as ISTIFNYDA. Its name, according to the dictionary of the Ancient Greek language by Ioannis Stamatakos, comes from the ancient thematic word stefani, meaning anything that surrounds the head (for protection or decoration). It had its highest population density in the century 1650 to 1750, when its population began to decline. In 1824, it was completely deserted for about 30 years due to the raid of Mustafa Pasha of Shkorda or Skontra Pasha.[2]
Lake Stefaniada
To the northeast of the village, at a distance of about 1.5 kilometers and at an altitude of 750 meters, is the lake of the same name, one of the youngest lakes in Greece, which has a surface area of 110 acres and a coastline that reaches 1.8 kilometers. It was created in January 1963, after several days of rainfall and a large landslide of the "Stoichios" slope. To the northwest of the lake is the small mountain range of Sminikos, to the north of it passes the Petriliotis stream and to the southeast of it rises Mount Zervos at 1,763 meters. These landslides and the creation of the lake resulted in the end of the prosperity of Stefaniada as many houses were swept away and the village was abandoned by most of its residents.[2][3]
Administrative - Population
It is officially mentioned, after the integration of Thessaly, in 1883 in the Government Gazette 126A - 02/04/1883 as being annexed to the then municipality of Argithea and in 1900 with the Government Gazette 291A - 20/12/1900 as being designated its seat.[4] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, together with Aetochori, Marathos III and Romia, they form the community of Stefaniada, which falls under the municipal unit of East Argithea of the Municipality of Argithea, while according to the 2011 census, 31 residents were registered.[5]
The population censuses after World War II are:
