Leontito (Λεοντίτον) Karditsa

Leontito is a settlement in Thessaly in the Regional Unit of Karditsa.[2][3]

Geographical - Historical information

Leontito is located towards the border with the Regional Unit of Arta, on the slopes of Mount Tsournato in the Thessalian Agrafa at an altitude of 960 meters[3][4]. It is approximately 76 km. W.-SW. from Karditsa and 25 km. SE. from Anthiro (the seat of the municipality). Its attractions are the village square with the almost century-old plane tree shading about one hectare[5], the old stone school building which houses the library and periodically hosts exhibitions and various cultural activities as well as the Paliantonis watermill with water grinding on the village river.[6]

Leontito is considered a settlement of the late Byzantine era, i.e. it existed before the Ottoman invasion of Western Thessaly (1395/1396). It is mentioned in the Ottoman census of 1454/1455 as Londid, belonging together with Vokopilisi (Fountoto?) to the same timarihoux and being part of Agrafa. Another reference to the village is made, in 1530, in the unpublished intention 37 of the Monastery of Dousikos, as well as that the inhabitants cultivated cereals, fruit trees (walnuts, apple trees) and raised sheep. Its name comes from its first settler, who was called Leontitos.[3]

Administrative - Demographic data

It is officially mentioned, after the integration of Thessaly, in 1883 in the Government Gazette 126A - 02/04/1883 that it was annexed to the municipality of Argithea and in 1912 in the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912 that it was designated as the seat of the homonymous newly founded community.[7] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, it constitutes the community of Leontito which falls under the municipal unit of East Argithea of the Municipality of Argithea, while according to the 2011 census, 98 residents were registered.[8]
