Agia Marina (Αγία Μαρίνα) Achaia
Agia Marina is a small village in Achaia, located in the Tritaia region. Since 2010, it has been part of the Municipality of Erymanthos. The settlement of Kato Agia Marina also belongs to the homonymous community.
History
The name of the village comes from its parish church. It is mentioned in a Venetian document of 1699 that the village had the obligation to "provide a forb for the cavalry". In the 18th century, it formed a parish together with the neighboring village of Mastrantoni[1].
According to Iakovos R. Ragavis, in 1851 it had 35 families (148 residents) and in 1889 it had 270 residents.
In 1885 it is reported that the settlement was five-quarters of a mile from Prostovitsa, the then seat of the Municipality of Tritaia[2]. In 1903, Christos Koryllos reported that the village was an hour and a half drive from Prostovitsa and that it also had a secretariat (primary school)[3].
In 1932, excavations began in the wider area of the village, and more specifically on a hill at the location "Panagia", where archaeological excavations brought to light a number of finds[4]. New excavations were carried out in 1937. It is believed that the ancient city-state of Tritia (or Tritaia)[5] was located at this location and from the corruption of its name, the entire wider area of Vountouchla was named "Tritaia".
In 1944, the village was bombed by the German Nazi air force.
Administrative development
On 20/04/1835, it was annexed to the then Municipality of Erymanthos. With the Government Gazette 5A of 08/03/1841 it was annexed to the then Municipality of Tritaia. With the Government Gazette 256A of 28/08/1912 it was detached from the Municipality of Tritaia and designated as the seat of the homonymous community. With the Government Gazette 244A of 04/12/1997, in accordance with the Administrative Reform of "Kapodistrias", it was annexed to the Municipality of Tritaia as a municipal district thereof until 2010 when it was incorporated into the Municipality of Erymanthos (Government Gazette 87A - 07/06/2010) as a (local) community based on the Administrative Reform of "Kallikratis"[6].
