Historical information
Agia Marina, which was the medieval capital of the island, is the village that directly linked its name to the tragic Disaster of Kasos. There the islanders had gathered the bulk of their forces to face the Egyptians and their fleet, under Hussein Pasha, in May 1824. When the island was destroyed, Agia Marina was reduced to a pile of ruins.[4][8]
Sights
The Hellenic Chamber, a cave-rock roof, one of the most ancient places of worship in the Dodecanese, southwest of the village, by a paved path. Its facade is built of an isodomic ancient wall, with stones 4 m long and more than 1 m thick) - which strongly resembles a Mycenaean building - and ends in two small openings-entrances. The interior of the cave is divided into two sections and has openings like skylights. It was used continuously, from the Prehistoric to the Early Christian periods, and inside, inscriptions (linear A and B), ceramic objects, stone tools, coins from Rhodes, animal bones and shells were found. The area was also used as a shelter from pirate raids.
The Selai Cave or Stilokamara, also southwest of the village, from an inconspicuous path to "Chadies". It has dimensions of 30 X 8 meters and features impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
