Until 1960, Agia Marina was called Fagias.[3]

The settlement was recognized in 1866 as Fagias and was annexed to the community of Skoulikados of Zakynthos. In 1912 it was designated the seat of the homonymous community and in 1960 it was renamed Agia Marina. With the Government Gazette 244A - 04/12/1997 it was detached from the community of Agia Marina and annexed to the municipality of Artemision. With the Government Gazette 87A - 07/06/2010 it was detached from the municipality of Artemision and annexed to the municipality of Zakynthos.[2][10]

Sights

The Church of Agia Marina, founded in 1855 and completed in 1874, with a characteristic tower-shaped bell tower. The current church is located on the site of an older, smaller church that was demolished in order to build the current one in its place. The church consists of a basic square-plan building, with external dimensions of 15 X 15 m. which is internally divided into three aisles, defined by four pairs of Ionic columns and thus takes the form of a three-aisled basilica. The main entrances of the church are located on the north and south sides of the church, while on the west side there is also a secondary entrance, the so-called "women's" entrance known in the Ionian Islands, since through it women are led to the women's hall. The church of Agia Marina does not follow the type of single-aisled street basilica that prevails in Zakynthos - and in the Ionian Islands in general - nor the few three-aisled basilicas that survive on the island, but is the result of a particularly bold compositional proposal.
