Agia Marina (Αγία Μαρίνα) Leros

Agia Marina is a town, capital and main port of Leros. It is administratively part of the municipality of Leros, of the regional unit of Kalymnos, in the South Aegean region, according to the Kallikratis program.[1][2] Before the Kapodistrias plan and the Kallikrates program, it belonged to the province of Kalymnos of the Dodecanese prefecture, in the geographical department of the Aegean Islands.[3][4]

Together with the districts of Platano (administrative center) and Panteli (an old fishing village), Agia Marina forms a single residential complex and has been classified as a traditional settlement since 1978. The area is full of ancient, Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments.[4][5]

Geography

Agia Marina is a coastal settlement in the eastern part of Leros. It is located in the southern inlet of the Alinda Bay, between the Apitiki and Merovigli hills. It is characterized as a rural lowland settlement, at an average elevation of 10.[1][3][4][5][6][7]

Platanos, an old autonomous district, where many traditional two-story houses are preserved. Among them are many mansions, such as Kandiellos and Antonellos. It is densely built, with narrow picturesque alleys and Avlaki with the cold fountains from the water of the Paliaskloupi spring. It is the administrative center of the town and here are housed the Town Hall, the Library and the Historical Archive of the island. The main church is the church of Agia Paraskevi, which was once a metropolis.
Panteli Castle, a symbol of Leros with a wonderful view. It is Byzantine, built on a site where, probably, there was an ancient acropolis. During the Knights' Rule (15th century), the fortifications were strengthened and the outer enclosure was built, as the two inner enclosures date back to the Middle Byzantine period. The castle has large underground warehouses and water tanks. On its western side is the Church of Our Lady of the Castle, built in the late 17th century, with a gold-plated iconostasis and remarkable hagiographies. The Ecclesiastical Museum is also located here, where rare manuscripts and books, icons, vestments and other ecclesiastical objects are exhibited.
The Bourtsi or Bourtzi Fortress, or Bruzi in the harbor, a Byzantine castle in a fortified position. Mosaic floors of an ancient building have been uncovered here, which was a continuation of the ancient settlement on the foundations of Agia Varvara. It has four arched openings and the trace of a fifth on the north side. In their original form, these openings were, apparently, covered internal vaulted defense spaces.

The church of Agia Marina, built in 1933 on the site of an older church of the same name. The church is stone-built and the facade of the church is clad with carved black stones from the island of Levitha and with red mosaics from the island's bay, Kryfos. The rhythm is cruciform with a dome. It belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Leros, Kalymnos and Astypalaia. The church celebrates on July 17
