Ano Fteri (Άνω Φτέρη) Fthiotida
Ano Fteri or Pano Fteri is a mountainous village of Central Greece in the Regional Unit of Fthiotida.[1]
Geography - History
Ano Fteri is located on the border with the Regional Unit of Evrytania at a distance of 19 km. W.-SW. from Sperchiada (seat of the municipality), 49 km. W. from Lamia and 55 km. E. from Karpenisi. It is built on the northern slopes of Mount Goulinas at an altitude of 770 meters. According to local tradition, the village was built around 1770 by Epirusians who wanted to avoid the Turks and who then (after the Revolution of 1821) moved to today's Fteri (or Kato Fteri) at a lower altitude. The French traveler François Poukeville, around 1810, classified it "in the "Voukaia" section of the Patrazik cadastre, as Fteri with 60 houses", while in an unofficial census of 1835 conducted by the French, it is listed as "Fteri" in the Municipality of Sperchiada with 386 residents and 83 families. In the Prothese of Rentina, on f. 172a along with the settlements of Seliani, Goriani it is listed as "Fteri" while on f. 172b -173a there are writings later than the first. At the location - hill "Ellinika", between Ano Fteri and Fteri, there are remains of an ancient wall with towers and the area has been designated an archaeological site.[2]
Administratively
It is mentioned as a separate settlement with the name Ano Pteri, officially for the first time in 1940, being annexed to the then community of Fteri and in 1961 its name was corrected to Ano Fteri.[3] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, together with Fteri, it forms the local community of Fteri, which falls under the municipal unit of Sperchiadas of the Municipality of Makrakomi and according to the 2011 census has a population of 39 residents.[4]
