Mesopotamia is a lowland village of Central Greece in the Regional Unit of Fthiotida at an altitude of 125 meters.[1]

Geography - History

Mesopotamia is located in the valley of Sperchios and the confluence of the river with the tributary of Inachos (Vistriza). It is 5 km NE of Sperchiada (seat of the municipality), 9 km E.-SE. from Makrakomi, 28 km W. from Lamia. The village is mentioned in the prefecture of Rentina under the name Halili in f. 174a along with the settlements Platystomo, Makresi, Varimbopi and Amalotes, while in f. 174b – 176a there are inscriptions older than the first. In an unofficial census of 1835 by French travelers, it had 61 families and 283 residents.[2] Officially, in the same year, it was again mentioned as Halili, annexed to the then municipality of Sperchiada. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912, it was designated the seat of the newly founded community of the same name, and in 1930, with the Government Gazette 251A - 24/07/1930, it was renamed Mesopotamia.[3] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, it is the local community of Mesopotamia, which falls under the municipal unit of Sperchiada of the Municipality of Makrakomi, and according to the 2011 census, it has a population of 377 residents.[4]
