Ano Kallithea (Άνω Καλλιθέα) Fthiotida
Ano Kallithea is a mountainous village of Central Greece in the Regional Unit of Fthiotida.[1]
Geography - History
Ano Kallithea is located on the slopes of Mount Goulinas[2] at an altitude of 840 meters[3], 8 km. S.-S.W. from Spercheiada (seat of the municipality) and 40 km. W. from Lamia. In the village square with its characteristic plane trees is the parish church of Agios Athanasios[4] and a few taverns.[5] It was first officially mentioned in 1940 as being annexed to the then community of Kallithea Spercheiada.[6] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, together with Kato Kallithea, it forms the local community of Kallithea, which falls under the municipal unit of Spercheiada of the Municipality of Makrakomi and according to the 2011 census has a population of 85 residents.[7]
Ano Kallithea Fthiotida is mentioned since the time of the Turkish occupation and the French traveler François Poukeville "classifies it in the "Voukaia" section of the Patratzik cadastre, as a Gyptochori with 30 houses". In 1835, after the liberation, in an unofficial census conducted by the French and lasting two years, it is listed as "Aygyptochori" with 183 residents and 40 families.[8] From the early 1800s until 1865 it was the residence of the Kontogianni family, and Mitsos Kontogiannis died and was buried in 1847 in this village.[9]
