Platanos (Πλάτανος)  Fthiotida

Platanos is a mountainous village of Central Greece in the Regional Unit of Fthiotida[1].

Geography - History

Platanos is located near the western borders with the Regional Unit of Evrytania and Aitoloakarnania. The village is built on the northeastern slopes of Mount Oxia in the Vardoussia mountain range at an altitude of 880 meters[2] and is 32 km. SW. from Makrakomi (seat of the municipality), 61 km. W.-SW. from Lamia and 39 km. SE. from Karpenisi. According to local tradition, its original location, before being destroyed by the Turks, was in "Paliochori" and its current location began to be built around the middle of the 19th century.[3] South of the village, 600 meters away and at an altitude of 1,050 meters, is the Monastery of Oxia or Agia or Stagia, Agios Nikolaos the Younger in the Mountains, which is celebrated on May 9.[4]

It is mentioned since the time of the Turkish occupation as Stagia and after the liberation in 1836 it was officially annexed to the then municipality of Omilaion. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912, it was designated the seat of the newly founded community of the same name and in 1957, with the Government Gazette 253A - 14/12/1957, it was renamed Platanos.[5] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, it is the local community of Platanos, which falls under the municipal unit of Sperchiada, Municipality of Makrakomi, and according to the 2011 census, it has a population of 84 residents.[6]
