Kato Kampia (Κάτω Καμπιά) Fthiotida
Kato Kampia is a semi-mountainous village of Central Greece in the Regional Unit of Fthiotida[1] and is part of the Municipality of Makrakomi, Fthiotida[2]. It is 12 km. SW. from Makrakomi and 41 km. W. from Lamia.
History
According to tradition, the village was built in Byzantine times higher than its current location in the location of Kartsaros and at an altitude of 960 meters on the NW side of Mount Goulina. Later, during the 13th century, the village was moved to the location of Paliokambia. The village owes its current name of Kambia to the fact that it was built on a small plateau – in a small plain, as the older people characteristically said.
Great craftsmen from Epirus built around 73 stone houses, of which only ruins can be seen today. The church of Agios Nikolaos must have been built around 1293-1296 by the same craftsmen, which, according to the sources, was architecturally identical to the churches of Hosios Loukas of Livadia, Christians of Triphylia, Agioi Theodoroi of Mystras, as well as the catholicon of the Daphni Monastery in Attica.
Unfortunately, the residents did not appreciate the importance of the monument and around 1915 they demolished the church to build a later one a few meters further away. Thus, an important document of the history of the area was lost forever, as Kostis Triantafyllou states:
“A few stones and mosaics under huge oak trees testify that here once stood the Church of St. Nicholas, which with its miracles became known in the invocation ‘Help Christ and the Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas from Kampia’”.
During the period of Turkish rule, the inhabitants of the village, in order to avoid the suffering, settled in groups in smaller settlements in the surrounding area and in the places with the current toponyms Paleochori-Gavros and elsewhere. In 1835, with the creation of the Greek state, the village is recorded with the toponym Kampia-Gavros and with a population of 67 inhabitants.
It must have been in its current location after 1835 and in 1912 it was officially recognized[3] as the Community of Kambia, with its headquarters in Kato Kambia (present-day) and the settlements of Ano Kambia and Hania Kambia.[2]
The village, continuing its course through time, was destroyed by the German Occupation troops, who burned it in 1944.[4] The settlement was rebuilt in the early 1950s. Here it is necessary to underline the significant contribution of the Athens College, which at the same time undertook and built at its own expense the Primary School of the village in the new location where it is located today.
