The old name of the village was Sekerli, under which it is mentioned in 1919 in the Official Gazette 48A-05/03/1919 to be annexed to the then community of Kilkis. The village is characterized as purely refugee, after the Balkan Wars and the population exchange, the Refugee Resettlement Committee (ERAP) settled 64 refugee families (213 people)[2], several of whom were from Nikopolis (Garasari) of Pontus[3] and some Armenian-speaking[4]. It was renamed Zacharato in 1927 and in 1934 it was detached from the prefecture of Thessaloniki and annexed to the prefecture of Kilkis[5]. According to the Kallikratis program, together with Kilkis, Argyroupoli, Kolchida, Metalliko, Xirovrisi and Sevasto, it forms the municipal community of Kilkis, which belongs to the municipal unit of Kilkis of the municipality of Kilkis and according to the 2011 census has a population of 196 inhabitants[6].
