Kristoni or Kristona is a village in Kilkis Prefecture at an altitude of 210 meters.[1][2]

Geography – History

Kristoni is located in the center of the prefecture, 4 km southwest of the city of Kilkis and 48 km north of Thessaloniki.[3] Due to the close distance, as well as the building development, Kristoni is now considered a suburb of Kilkis, while the railway station of the city of Kilkis is located in the settlement.[4] There is also a Commonwealth war cemetery (graves of English officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers) from World War I.[5] Pontian refugees from the areas of the former Soviet Union settled in this settlement in the 1990s.

Name – Administrative

The old name of the village was Sari Giol[6] (Yellow Lake) and under this name it is mentioned in 1919 as the seat of the homonymous community. In 1926 it was renamed to Kriston and in 1940 it was corrected to Kristoni.[7] According to the "Kallikratis" program, it constitutes the Local Community of Kristoni which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Kilkis of the Municipality of Kilkis and according to the 2011 census it has a population of 988 inhabitants[8] and an area of approximately 100 hectares.
