Stavrochori, officially Stavrochorion, is a lowland village of Kilkis in central Macedonia at an altitude of 110 meters[2].

Geographical information

Stavrochori is located 8.5 km. NW. of the city of Kilkis and 47 km. NW. of Thessaloniki[3], between the villages of Metalliko (SE) and Cherso (NW). It is built next to the Thessaloniki - Doirani national road and the Thessaloniki - Alexandroupolis railway line.
Kilkis Industrial Area

In the northwest is the Kilkis industrial area (I.A.E.) which has been operating since 1985. Until 2000, the administration and management of the I.A.E. was exercised by the ETVA Bank S.A. Since 2000, its administration and management have been transferred by decision of the then Minister of Development to the entrepreneurs established in it and to the DI.VI.PE.K. S.A. established by them.[4] The Kilkis Industrial Area (VI.PE. Kilkis) is the third largest in Greece.

Name - administrative details

The old name of the village, from the time of the Turkish occupation, was Hatzigiannous and is mentioned in 1919 in the Government Gazette 48A-05/03/1919 as being annexed to the community of Armoutsi which at that time belonged to the prefecture of Thessaloniki. It was renamed Stavrochorion in 1927 and in 1934 it was detached to the then newly established prefecture of Kilkis[5]. According to the program, Kallikratis is the local community of Stavrochori, which belongs to the municipal unit of Kilkis of the municipality of Kilkis and according to the 2011 census has a population of 398 residents[6].
