Kastanies[2], officially Kastaneai [3], is a lowland village of Kilkis at an altitude of 105 meters[2].

Geography - History

Kastanies is located 11.5 km northwest of the city of Kilkis. Its old name, during the Turkish occupation, was Gerbasel[4]. It is considered a purely "refugee" village since it was completely destroyed after the Balkan Wars[5][6] and after the population exchange, refugees from Kastanies in the province of Metres or Çatalca (Turkish: Çatalca) of eastern Thrace settled there. They were officially mentioned under their old name in 1919 in the Official Gazette 48A-05/03/1919 when they were annexed to the then community of Armoutsi (Megalis Vrysis) which belonged to the prefecture of Thessaloniki. In 1926 it was renamed Kastanies, in 1934 it was transferred to the newly established prefecture of Kilkis, while in 1940 it was corrected to Kastaneai [3]. According to the Kallikratis program, it is the local community of Kastanies, which belongs to the municipal unit of Kilkis of the municipality of Kilkis and according to the 2011 census has a population of 430 inhabitants[7].
