Megali Vrysi is a lowland village in the prefecture of Kilkis at an altitude of 120 meters[1].

Name

The old name of the village was Armoutsi[2].

Geographical - historical information

Megali Vrysi is located[3] 4 kilometers W.-NW. of the city of Kilkis, between the villages of Baptistis (SW), Kastanies (NW), Stavrochori (N) and Metalliko (NE).

The inhabitants of the village are mainly refugees from the Caucasus region and Eastern Thrace. Specifically, the Pontic residents originate from the village of Karaurgan in the Sarikamis region of Kars, to which they moved in 1878-1882, from the village of Hotar in Sevastia, to which they moved around 1840, and from the village of Simikli in Argyroupoli, Pontos.

In the neighboring area of "Yiannes (Metallic)" there is a thermal spring from a natural mineral gush, around the spring extends an important archaeological site, where the water was previously used for balneotherapy[4].

Administrative information

In 1919, with its old name it is mentioned in the Official Gazette 48A-05/03/1919 to be designated as the seat of the homonymous community. In 1927 it was renamed, with the Official Gazette 179A-30/08/1927, to Megali Vrysi. Until 1994 it was the seat of the community of Megali Vrysi to which the neighboring settlement of Metalliko also belonged. After the implementation of the Kapodistrias plan, it was incorporated into the municipality of Kilkis[5]. According to the Kallikratis program, it constitutes the local community of Megali Vrysi, which belongs to the municipal unit of Kilkis of the municipality of Kilkis and according to the 2011 census has a population of 492 permanent residents[6].
