Melanthio is a mountainous village of Kilkis at an altitude of 530 meters[1].

Geography - History

Melanthio is located on the border of the prefecture with the prefecture of Thessaloniki at a distance of 23 km. E.-SE. of the city of Kilkis and 43.5 km. N.-NW. of Thessaloniki[2]. Most of its inhabitants are Pontic refugees from the province of Melanthia (Kotyora) of the Melanthios River (Turkish: Melen or Melet Irmak.) which flows into the Black Sea. This is the reason why clubs were twinned with Melanthios of Kastoria[3]. The old name of the village, from the time of the Turkish occupation, was Pazarli or Pazarli and is mentioned in 1918 in the Government Gazette 152A-09/07/1918 as the seat of the then community of Lutitza Mahaladon which then belonged to the prefecture of Thessaloniki. It was renamed Melanthio in 1927 and in 1935 it was detached to the then newly founded prefecture of Kilkis[4]. According to the Kallikratis program, it constitutes the local community of Melanthio which belongs to the municipal unit of Kilkis of the municipality of Kilkis and according to the 2011 census has a population of 123 permanent residents[5].
