Ramia (Ράμια) Arta

Ramia is a settlement in Epirus in the Regional Unit of Arta.[2][3][4]

Geographical - historical information

Ramia is located towards the border with the Regional Unit of Ioannina, at the southwestern foothills of the Athamanika Mountains at an altitude of 620 meters.[2] It is approximately 23 km. W.-NW. from Voulgareli (seat of the municipality), 41 km. N.-NE. from Arta and 66 km. SE. from Ioannina. It is a village with very sparsely populated houses in a verdant area with many and varied trees, either fruit-bearing or forest.

According to oral tradition, the original location of the village was at the location “Paleochori” while there are two versions for the origin of its name. According to the first, because the word Ramia means "air village", it is due to the winds that surround the village from all points of the horizon. While according to the second, it is from the name of a princess Ramia, who was sickly and who settled in the "Old Village" which had a dry climate to get well.[4]

The name Ramia is mentioned for the first time in the 1821 Tzoumerka nahiye, where 23 families reside. Panagiotis Aravantinos states in the "Chronography of Epirus" that "the Christian houses in Ramia in 1854 were 10" while Georgios Hasiotis in the "Epirotic Educational Association of Constantinople" states that "in 1864-65 a common school operated with 20 students. The inhabitants were 250 and lived in 5 settlements. The teacher's salary was 500 grossia and food".

Administrative data

It is officially reported, after the liberation in 1881, that in 1883 it was registered in the then municipality of Agnantes and in 1912 it was designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[5] According to the "Kallikratis" program, together with Elafopidama, Livadi, Gerovrysi and Dara, they form the Community of Ramia, which falls under the Municipal Unit of Agnanta of the Municipality of Central Tzoumerka and according to the 2011 census had a population of 119 residents.[6]
