Gouriana (Γουριανά) Arta

Gouriana is a mountainous settlement in the municipality of Kentrika Tzoumerka in the prefecture of Arta, Epirus. According to the 2011 census, its population was 58 residents[1].

General and historical information

The settlement is built north of Arta, at an altitude of 500 meters[2]. According to the Kapodistrias Plan, Gouriana was until the end of 2010, a settlement of the Municipality of Agnantes. Based on the administrative division resulting from the Kallikratis Plan, the settlement was incorporated into the Municipality of Kentrika Tzoumerka[3].

In 1821, a clash occurred near the village between Greek revolutionaries and a small Ottoman force, resulting in the residents abandoning Gouriana fearing possible retaliation from the Ottomans[4]. In 1881, it was included in the 26 villages of Tzoumerka that were ceded to Greece[5].
Sights

At the location of Tzouma near the settlement is the monastery of Panagia Chrysospiliotissa (a 17th-century building)[6]. Other points of interest are the archaeological site of the acropolis of Gouriana (between the village and neighboring Romanos), as well as the old watermill of Gouriana, which has been declared a listed monument[1].
