Kato Mousiotitsa (Κάτω Μουσιωτίτσα) Ioannina
Kato Mousiotitsa or Mousiotitsa is a mountainous village in the former province of Dodoni in the prefecture of Ioannina at an altitude of 550 meters[1][2].
Geographical data - sights
Kato Mousiotitsa is located on the eastern slopes of Mount Tomaros or Olytsikas and west of the Louros River and is surrounded by 5 mountains: Bitera, Spithari, Pourizi, Kalogeritsa and Katafi. It is 33 km. S. of the city of Ioannina and 55 km. N.-N.W. of Arta. Together with the neighboring villages of Ano Mousiotitsa, Nea Mousiotitsa and Mesoura, the entire area is referred to as Mousiotitsa.
In the wider area, south of the "Terovo inn" located on the Arta - Ioannina national road and near the "Zeta" bridge, there are ruins of an ancient fortress which has been declared an archaeological site since 1962[3]. An important attraction is the old church of Agios Nikolaos, which is considered to have been settled in the early 18th century and was first mentioned in Greek ecclesiastical records in the year 1791. Since 2009 the wider area "Spithari - Panagia - Ano Kampos" in which the church is located has been declared a historical landscape[4]. The lands of Mousiotitsa in the ravine crossed by the Louros River and which are overgrown with plane trees, shrubs (maquis) and sedges are part of the "Northern Louros Straits" which have been designated as a place of special natural beauty (TIFK)[5].
Youth Association of Martyriki Mousiotitsa
In 2008, the Youth Association of Martyriki Mousiotitsa was founded, which as an active association has undertaken the history of Mousiotitsa, having established a Folklore Museum consisting of existing elements of the village. The Youth Association has created its own blood bank with volunteer blood donors. Also, almost every year since its establishment, it has carried out tree plantings throughout the village with a total of over 670 trees. It has carried out restoration and maintenance of the old buildings of the Mousiotitsa Community.[6]
Name - historical data
The origin of the name Mousiotitsa is unknown. It is speculated by scholarly research that the name is of Slavic origin due to the ending "-itsa", which is common in Slavic settlement names. Other more local theories state that the name comes from old myths of the ancient inhabitants of the rivers known as "Muses" or from a queen who lived in the area that is now the ruins of a castle (near the Zeta bridge) dating back to the 3rd century.
The Mousiotitsa Holocaust
On July 25, 1943, followed by August 27, 1943, German SS troops surrounded the village from four different points and executed a total of 153 civilians. Among the German soldiers were selected members of the Edelweiss division. The attack and the massacre that followed were carried out in retaliation for the participation of the villagers in the resistance and for the attack in which a German officer was killed in the nearby area of "Zeta"[7][8]. Among the killed civilians were 4 babies, 36 children aged 2 to 7, 23 children aged 8 to 16 and 13 women[9]. In memory of the executed, an annual 3 km long sacrifice route is organized, from the location of Spithari, the place of execution, to the village[2][10].
Administrative details
Kato Mousiotitsa as a community was established in 1919 with the Government Gazette 184A - 19/08/1919 with its seat. In 1996 the seat was transferred to the settlement of Nea Mousiotitsa[11]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Ano Mousiotitsa, Nea Mousiotitsa and Mesoura form the local community of Mousiotitsa which belongs to the municipal unit of Agios Dimitrios of the Municipality of Dodoni and according to the 2011 census as a settlement it has a population of 256 residents while the community as a whole has 605[12].
