Melia (Μελιά) Ioannina
Melia is a mountainous village in the prefecture of Ioannina, in Epirus, at an altitude of 520 meters[1].
Geographical - historical information
Melia belongs to the so-called villages of Ano Louros[2] and is located 31 km south of the city of Ioannina and 4 km west of the Arta - Ioannina national road[3]. In the wider area of the village there is the inn of "Emin Aga" which was the headquarters of King Constantine during the Balkan Wars of 1912 - 1913 and was the base for the liberation of Ioannina. In 1950 it was classified as a historical monument[4] and has now been converted into a war museum[5]. The village's attractions include the churches of Agios Nikolaos (originally built in 1816) and the chapels of Agios Theodoros Tironas (1853) and Agia Paraskevi (1893)[6].
Name - administrative information
Until 1928 it was called Melichovo[7] while in older sources, manuscripts of the Monastery of Varlaam of Meteora from 1613 which list donors to the monastery, it is referred to as Melichovo[2]. According to the Kallikrates plan, together with Lagiotissa and Agia Paraskevi they form the local community of Melia which belongs to the municipal unit of Agios Dimitrios of the Municipality of Dodoni and according to the 2011 census has a population of 48 residents[8].
