Agios Athanasios (Άγιος Αθανάσιος) Evrytania

Agios Athanasios is a mountainous village in Central Greece on the borders of the Regional Unit of Evrytania with the Regional Unit of Karditsa.[2]

Geographical features - sights

Agios Athanasios is built on the slopes of Agrafa at an altitude of 1,115 meters and west of the peak of Delidini (altitude 2,163 meters) while the Agrafiotis River begins in its area. It is 41 km. N. from Kerasochori, 79 km. N.-NW. from Karpenisi and 3 km. N. from Trovato, of which it has long been considered a settlement. The name of the village is due to its homonymous church. Religious sights include the chapel of Panagia (Assumption of the Virgin Mary) on the "Kleftogianni" ridge and the Evangelismos of the Virgin Mary[2] to its west, where the area of the Tsouka Sakka-Asprorema Wildlife Refuge (Mt. Delidimi and Fteri) begins "with gorges and ravines and limestone cliffs in the alpine zone".[3]

Holy Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The chapel of Panagia is the katholikon of the old Holy Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary of Trovatos, founded in the 17th century by the monk Antonios. The church is a "triangular, single-aisled building with a flat roof and a gabled roof, with frescoes and a remarkable wood-carved iconostasis". The monastery has been designated a historical monument and a school staffed by monks operated there, as well as a library with hundreds of volumes of books and manuscripts. A young boy named Eugenios Giannoulis of Aitolos studied there for four years (1614-1618).[4][5]

Administrative data

It was officially mentioned as a separate settlement for the first time in 2001, when it was registered in the then Local Department of Trovatos of the municipality of Agrafa[6], with 27 permanent residents.[7] According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Trovato and Kavakia, it forms the local community of Trovato, which belongs to the municipal unit of Agrafa of the Municipality of Agrafa and, according to the 2011 census, has a population of 54 inhabitants.[8]
