Agrafa (Άγραφα ) Evrytania
Agrafa is a mountainous village and community of Central Greece in the Regional Unit of Evrytania[2].
Geographical information
Agrafa is built at an altitude of 840 meters[3] in the heart of the Agrafa mountain range and at the foot of Mount Koukourountzos. The Agrafiotis River originates from the foot of the village and at the locations of "Sborn" and "Honteika".[2] The village has belonged to the Kallikratian municipality of Agrafa since 2011, while until 2010 it was the seat of the Kapodistrian municipality of Agrafa[4] and has always been the traditional center of the region in northern Evrytania. Its population, according to the 2021 Census, is 377 inhabitants[5]. Agrafa is still not connected by a paved road to the surrounding area. The road through Karpenisi has almost been completely paved (a 6km dirt road remains). Through Karditsa, the connection is made in two ways, either from Lake Plastiras through the village of Vraggiana (15km dirt road) or through the village of Saika (Petralona) crossing the ridge above the settlement of Kamaria (25km dirt road). They are 68 km from Karpenisi and 66km from Karditsa[3].
Historical information
Agrafa is associated with events of the Turkish occupation, such as the battles against the Turk-Albanians, the actions of thieves and armatoles, such as Katsantonis.
In 1942, the village was burned by the Italians, but was rebuilt, preserving the traditional element in the architecture.
In a recent archaeological survey, stone tools were discovered in the area, which constitute the first signs of human activity from the Middle Paleolithic Era[6]
Among the oldest surviving buildings in the village are the churches of Agios Georgios and Panagia, which were built in 1610 and 1600 respectively.
