Vrangiana is a mountainous village in the prefecture of Evrytania. It is built at an altitude of 1,060 meters on the slopes of Agrafa.[1] It is also called Megala Vrangiana, in contrast to Mikra Vrangiana in Karditsa. It falls administratively under the Kallikratia Municipality of Agrafa and its population, according to the 2011 Census, amounts to 42 residents,[2] who are mainly engaged in livestock farming. It is 77 kilometers from Karpenisi, 15 kilometers from Agrafa and 53 kilometers from Karditsa.
Historical information
The oldest name of the village was Vraniana, which is mentioned in a Meteora codex of the 13th - 14th century.[3] This name came from the large Byzantine family of the Vranades who maintained summer pastures and residences in the area. The Vranas families are mentioned in a 1454 tax census of the Turks as residents of Vrangiana. The name's evolution to Vrangiana is observed in the 20th century.
The community of Vrangiana experienced economic and demographic growth during the Ottoman rule, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries.
A result of this growth was the establishment by Eugenius the Aitolian in 1661 of a School for higher education (which later received the name Hellenic Museum of Agrafa).[3] His successor was his student Anastasios the Gordian from 1682 to 1728.[3] Then Theophanes, a student of Gordian, took over the direction of the School until approximately 1750.[3] The school is believed to have been destroyed during the revolution of 1770. It is noteworthy that Anastasios Gordios established a library in the school with 4,000 volumes of books, manuscripts and printed matter. After the destruction of the school, the library was dispersed.[4]
In 1806, the village was burned by the Turks, because the inhabitants refused to surrender the armatolos Katsantonis.
