Tridendro (Τρίδενδρο) Evrytania
Tridendro or Tridentro is a mountainous village of Central Greece in the Regional Unit of Evrytania.[2]
Geographical - historical information
Tridendro is located towards the northern border with the Regional Unit of Karditsa, in Agrafa at an altitude of 930 meters[3] and the eastern slopes of the Kafki peak (altitude 1,608 m) at a distance of 73 km. NW. from Karpenisi and 34 km. N. from Kerasochori (municipal seat). The houses of the village are sparsely built on a slope with elevation differences between them while the Agrafiotis River passes at its eastern edge. The village is referred to since the time of the Turkish occupation as Velkodino or Velisdoni and was the place of origin of Nikos Velisdonitis who was a student of Eugenios Giannoulis of Aitolo, studied medicine in Italy and served as the Sultan's physician in the 17th century.[4] According to tradition, a medical school operated at the location "Pyrgous" (building ruins).[5] A religious attraction in the area is the Monastery of Stana, at a distance of approximately 7 km. S.-SE. to Epiniana, which is built on granite rocks and its history begins in the mid-12th century.[6] Since 1991, it has been classified as a historical monument because it is "a sample of the architectural and painting art in this region during the late 18th century and early 19th century." [7]
Administrative data
It is officially referred to as a settlement, after the liberation, with its old name Velisdoni in 1836 being annexed to the then municipality of Kyfaion. In 1912 the name was corrected to Velisdoni and in 1928 with the Government Gazette 81A - 14/05/1928 it was renamed Tridendron. [8] According to the Kallikratis plan, it constitutes the local community of Tridendron which belongs to the municipal unit of Agrafa of the Municipality of Agrafa and according to the 2011 census it has a population of 80 inhabitants.
