Plaisia (Πλαίσια) Ioannina
Plaisia[2][3] or Plaisia Malakasiou[4][5] is a settlement in Epirus in the Regional Unit of Ioannina.
General information
Plaisia is located in Northern Tzoumerka, west of the Arachthos River, at an altitude of 620 meters[2] and belongs to the Katsanohoria of Epirus[6]. It is 30 km. S.-SE. of the city of Ioannina and 35 km. W.-SW. of Pramanta. The village is built amphitheatrically and radially around its central square in an area overgrown with walnut trees, fig trees, wild pears, sycamore trees, lime trees and large plane trees. Its houses are stone-built according to traditional architecture.[3]
Sights
The house of the Geros brothers, which has been described as a work of art because it "presents remarkable interest both from a typological point of view (loggia with two characteristic columns, consisting of stone flywheels) and from a morphological point of view (cornice stones, lamp of the openings, hewn crypt)".[7]
The church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which has been described as a historical monument. "It is a cruciform basilica with a dome and an additional narthex. It is built with hewn stone and the roof is covered with black slate. The church is recorded with frescoes from 1664. The church is adorned with a wooden carved iconostasis from the 17th century and two important icons from 1653".[8]
Administrative - population data
Plaisia is mentioned after the liberation of Epirus written as Plesia Malakasiou in 1919 in the Government Gazette 184A - 19/08/1919 to be designated as the seat of the homonymous newly founded community and in 1928 its name was corrected to Plaisia.[5] According to the Kallikratis plan, it constitutes the community of Plaisia Malakasiou which belongs to the municipal unit of Katsanohoria of the Municipality of North Tzoumerka and according to the 2011 census it has a population of 234 inhabitants.[9]
