Elliniko is a mountainous village in the prefecture of Ioannina at an altitude of 740 meters[1] and belongs to the Katsanochoria of Epirus.[2]

Geographical data - sights

Elliniko is located in the southeast of the prefecture and west of the Arachthos River. The village is approximately 20 km. SE. of the city of Ioannina and 38 km. W. of Pramanta. Sights are the museum of modern art "Theodoros Papagiannis" in the old elementary school of the village, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (1661) and outside it the holy monastery of Panagia Tsouka as well as the sites "Megales Pades" or "Raches" and "Donatos" with views of the Ioannina basin and the area of Tzoumerka.[3]

Holy Monastery of Panagia Tsouka

In the northeast of Elliniko, at the location "Tsouka" (altitude 760 meters) and at a distance of 1.5 km. is built the monastery of Panagia. It is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and according to tradition was founded around 1190 by the Byzantine emperor Isaac II Angelos, was destroyed in 1736 and renovated in 1779. It has a fortress character and the catholicon is cruciform with a dome. The frescoes that survive inside it date from the year 1662 and the stone-built bell tower from 1866.[4] Since 1985, it has been classified as a historical monument because it "constitutes an interesting and characteristic example of ecclesiastical architecture and painting of the post-Byzantine period in Epirus".[5]
Museum of Contemporary Art "Theodoros Papagiannis"

The museum exhibits works by sculptor and professor of the Athens School of Fine Arts Theodoros Papagiannis and a series of model medals and coins. Many of its exhibits have been created from the remains of the Polytechnic, combined and decorated with recyclable materials. They are works with a strong ecological conscience, referring to the history of the place, to the artist's memories of his school years in the village, etc.[6]

The route from the village that hosts the "Theodoros Papagiannis" Museum of Contemporary Art to the Monastery of Panagia Tsouka is decorated with works by Papagiannis, which further beautifies the landscape.

"I Rachi" Farm

It is located about 1 kilometer from the central square of the village and citizens can visit it for free. It is a private space that operates voluntarily and hosts many domestic birds, mammals and fish, such as geese and ducks from many parts of the world, breeds of pigeons from Germany, Pakistan, America, China and India, as well as peacocks, pheasants, rabbits, ponies, parrots, fish and snails.[7] These are some of the animals that the Farm hosts on its premises.[8] It was created for those who want to get close to nature and to raise awareness, especially among children, of environmental issues.

Traditional Stone Bridges
Bridge in the place name "Megalo Lagadi"

This is a single-arch stone bridge located in the village of Elliniko, on an unnamed stream in the area that flows into the Arachthos River. Its construction date is 1926.[9][9]
Bridge in the place name "Amperia"

This is a single-arch stone bridge located in the village of Elliniko, in the location "Beria" at an altitude of 599 meters (coordinates: N 39° 33΄29.9΄΄ E 020° 55΄50.7΄΄). The year of its construction is 1864[10] and the sponsor is Ioannis Loulis[10]

Nature
Korovesos Gorge

It is located below the village and the entrance to it is by descending a 17-meter-high waterfall. It is particularly narrow with dark spots where sunlight cannot penetrate, but also has a lot of beauty on the walls with water curtains and cave themes.[11]

Sioroka Forest

The forest is part of the Peristeri - Tzoumerka and Arachthos Gorge National Park, it is a protected area and is a Mixed Forest that hosts many species of plants and animals, in which hunting is prohibited while it has many honorary distinctions and is an important area for birds of prey. It starts below the Monastery of Tsouka, extends from the right to the Vouga path that leads to the Arachthos River and most of it is covered by holly trees, junipers (cedars), arias and laurels. This means that the forest remains green even in winter as the above trees do not shed their leaves. There are several herbs such as wormwood, oregano and marjoram but their collection is very difficult. Quite beautiful wildflowers can be seen even on the rocks. The fauna of the area is of great interest. Goats that escaped from herds of villagers and survived on their own lived and bred freely, thus creating a feral population. Foxes are another mammal that the area has in large numbers. The forest with the presence of large rocks makes the place ideal for birds of prey. Kestrels nest in the recesses, while short-tailed vultures, buzzards and hawks find the area ideal for hunting. Sioroka is the last refuge of the village for the rock partridge that can live there peacefully and fight for the recovery of its population. It also hosts magpies, crows, blackbirds, blue titmice, finches, jackdaws, choughs, jays, jays, and many other birds.[12]

Name - administrative details

The old name of the village was Lozetsi[13] and it was officially recognized as a community, after the liberation, with the Government Gazette 184A-19/08/1919. It was renamed to Elliniko in 1927.[14] According to the Kallikratis plan, it is the local community of Elliniko which belongs to the municipal unit of Katsanohoria of the Municipality of North Tzoumerka and according to the 2011 census has a population of 443 inhabitants.[15]
