Isalo (Ίσαλο) Rhodopi
Isalo is a lowland village of Thrace in the Rhodope Regional Unit.[2]
Geography - History
Isalo is located in the center of the Komotini plain at an altitude of 25 meters[3], 27 km W. from Sapes (seat of the municipality) and 10 km SE. from Komotini. The Lissos (Filiouris) river passes south of the village, the Egnatia Motorway to the north and east and the Komotini Industrial Area to the northeast. The village's residents are Muslims, 1/6 of them Roma and a few Pomak families.[4] There is a minority two-seater Primary School.[5] Its old name, during the Turkish occupation, was "Ousali"[6] and it was officially mentioned after the liberation of Thrace as Isalo in 1924 in the Government Gazette 194A - 14/08/1924 to be annexed to the then newly founded community of Amaranta.[7] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, together with Amaranta, Vakos, Kallithea and Pamphoros, it constitutes the local community of Amaranta, which falls under the municipal unit of Maroneia of the Municipality of Maroneia - Sapes and according to the 2011 census, it has a population of 137 residents.[8]
