Mirana (Μίρανα ) Rhodopi
Mirana or Moirana is a lowland village of Thrace in the Rhodope Regional Unit.[1] The Municipal Community of Mirana, which also includes the settlements of Venna and Salmoni, according to the 2021 census had a population of 974 inhabitants.
Geography - History
Mirana is located in the plain of Komotini with an altitude of 70 meters[2], at a distance of 18 km southeast of the city center and 25 km west of Sapes (seat of the municipality). The Lissos River passes to the north of the village, Salmoni to the west and the Egnatia Odos passes, the Ismaros Forest is to the south, and Pelagia to the east. Its inhabitants are Muslims, of whom a few are Pomaks and 1/6 are Roma.[3] In the southeast and on the "Isiklik" hill, a prehistoric settlement dating back to the Late Neolithic and early Bronze Age has been found, as well as a surface collection of pottery.[4] Their old name, during the Turkish occupation, is Mourati and officially referred to as Moirana, after the liberation, in 1924 in the Government Gazette 194A - 14/08/1924 they were designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name, while in 1940 their name was corrected to Mirana.[5] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, together with Venna and Salmoni, they constitute the local community of Mirana, which falls under the municipal unit of Maroneia of the Municipality of Maroneia - Saponi and according to the 2011 census has a population of 286 residents.[6]
