Askites is a lowland village of Thrace in the Rhodope Regional Unit.[1]

Geography - History

Askites is located towards the eastern border with the Evros Regional Unit, on the eastern edge of the Komotini plain and the northern foothills of Mount Ismaros at an altitude of 120 meters[2]. It is 19 km. SW. from Sapes (seat of the municipality), 30 km. SE. from Komotini and 41 km. W.-NW. from Alexandroupoli. At the location "Karga dere" and "Fournakos" there are tombs carved into the rock that are likely from the early Christian period.[3] The old name of the village, before the liberation, was Sofoular or Milios and in 1871 the doctor M. Melirritos mentions in his book "Historical and geographical description from an ecclesiastical perspective of the Theosostos province of Maroneia" that 356 Greeks, 177 Ottomans and 74 refugees lived there. In 1926, refugees from the Cappadocia region settled there, the majority of whom were from the villages of Agyrna and Agorya.[4] It is officially mentioned as Ascites, after the liberation, in 1924 in the Official Gazette 194A - 14/08/1924, annexing it to the then community of Maroneia.[5] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, together with Maroneia, Ano Askites, Agios Charalambos and Platanitis, it forms the local community of Maroneia, which falls under the municipal unit of Maroneia of the Municipality of Maroneia - Sapes and, according to the 2011 census, has a population of 68 residents.[6]
