Ano Askites (Άνω Ασκητές) Rhodopi
Ano Askites[1] or Kalogiros is a small semi-mountainous settlement in Thrace in the Regional Unit of Rodopi.
Geography - History
Ano Askites is located towards the eastern border with the Regional Unit of Evros, on the eastern edge of the plain of Komotini at an altitude of 155 meters[2]. The village is 20 km. SW. from Sapes (seat of the municipality), 31 km. SE. from Komotini and 42 km. W.-NW. from Alexandroupolis while it is next to and southwest of Askites of which it is considered a settlement. It is officially mentioned for the first time as a separate settlement in 1971, being registered in the then community of Maroneia.[3] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, together with Maroneia, Askites, Agios Charalambos and Platanitis, it constitutes the local community of Maroneia, which falls under the municipal unit of Maroneia of the Municipality of Maroneia - Sapons and, according to the 2011 census, has a population of 49 residents.[4] The settlement is inhabited exclusively by Muslims of Turkish origin.
