Regional unit : Kavala
Dato (Δάτο) Kavala
Dato (until 1926 Bereketli[1]) is a village in the Municipality of Kavala, in the Kavala regional unit, in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
General information
The settlement is built at an altitude of 52 meters[2] and according to the 2011 census, its population is 310. Until the population exchange in 1923, it was inhabited by Muslims,[3] while after the population exchange, 50 refugee families settled in Dato.[4]
Administratively, after its annexation to the Greek state, it was initially subordinated to the community of Amygdaleon, where it remained until 1949 when it was incorporated into the community of Polystylos. Following the changes brought about in local government by the Kapodistrias program, Dato was incorporated into the municipality of Philippi, while since 2011 it has belonged to the municipality of Kavala (specifically to the local community of Polystylos of the Philippi municipal unit).[5]
On the night of 5 to 6 July 1917, the martyrdom of the National Martyr Metropolitan of Eleftheroupolis Germanos Sakellarides took place between the settlements of Dato and Amygdaleonas in Philippi, who was beheaded and hanged by the Bulgarian occupying army.[6][7]
