Limnia (Λιμνιά) Kavala
Limnia (until 1926 Souyoutzouk[1]) is a village in the Municipality of Kavala of the Kavala regional unit, in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The municipal community of Limnia, which also includes the settlements of Vounochori and Lykostomo, according to the 2021 census had 97 residents, down from 182 in 2011 (of which 35 in Limnia). It is located at an altitude of 720 meters, on the southwestern slopes of the Lekani Mountains. Near the village are dense forests of deciduous trees, extensive meadows and abandoned fields with typical flora of these altitudes, such as various species of oak, maple, beech, juniper, ash, dogwood, chestnut, cherry and walnut trees.[2]
Until the population exchange in 1923, Limnia was one of the largest villages in the area. The 1900 statistics state that it was inhabited by both Turks and Greeks, and the 1910 Chalkiopoulos statistics state that it had 881 inhabitants, Muslims, and the statistics and population census by the Greek army in 1911 and 1913 state that it had 1,045 and 1,109 inhabitants respectively. In the 1920 census, it had 983 inhabitants.[3] After the population exchange, 86 refugee families settled in Limnia.[4] In the 1928 census, it had 386 inhabitants and in the 1940 census, it had 462 inhabitants.[3] With the Kapodistrias program, it was incorporated into the municipality of Philippi, and was formerly the seat of the community of Limnia.[5] Between Vounochori and Limnia is an abandoned marble quarry.[6]
