Polystylo (Πολύστυλο) Kavala

Polystylo, known until 1926 as Boulouska[1], Bolouska or Bouloustra, is a village in the Municipality of Kavala, of the homonymous regional unit, in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. According to the 2021 census, the municipal community of Polystylo, which also includes the settlements of Dato and Mikrochori, has 791 residents, down from 820 in 2011 (of which 420 in Polystylo). It is located at an altitude of 60 meters and is 10 kilometers from Kavala. Ecclesiastically, it belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Philippi, Neapolis and Thassos.

Information

The village has a kindergarten (former primary school) and a folklore museum, which are integrated into the same building. This area is suitable for environmental programs and school trips. The local community of Polystylos also includes the villages of Dato and Mikrochori. In the holy church of the Holy Trinity and the Five Martyrs of Polystylos, the graceful relics of Saints Efstratius, Afxentius, Eugenius, Mardarius and Orestes are kept.[2]

Historical information

Its name is due to the ancient marble pillars (columns), which were found in the area and have now been placed in the courtyard of the village church. "Many pillars", then. Hence "Polystylos". In the 19th century, there was a large estate in the area known as the estate of Bouloutska or Bouloustra.

After the exchange of populations, 49 refugee families settled in Polystylos.[3] This is, in other words, a purely refugee settlement, mainly Thracians. With the Kapodistrias program, it was incorporated into the municipality of Philippi and was previously part of the community of Amygdaleon until 1949, when it was detached from this community and became part of the community of Polystylos, of which it was designated as its headquarters.[4]

The Holy Five Martyrs

Polystylos is another refugee village. Half of its inhabitants came from Eastern Thrace, and the rest from Asia Minor.[3] Arriving in Greece, refugees from Simantra (Sementere) in Cappadocia (Karamanlides - Semendriotes), carrying the holy relics of the glorious holy Five Martyrs Efstratios, Afxentios, Eugenios, Mardarios and Orestos, initially resided (since 1924) in Kokkala, a mountainous village of Kavala and in 1944, due to plundering by the Bulgarians, they abandoned it, descended to the plain of Philippi and settled in Polystylos.

The Memory of the Holy Five Martyrs is honored on December 13, while the litany (Periphora) of their holy relics is held on the streets of the village every year on Zoodochos Pigi (Easter Friday), that is, five days after Easter. Additionally, every Pentecost Sunday (Pentecost Sunday afternoon) a festival is organized in the school yard due to the celebration of the Holy Trinity Church with food, drink and traditional dances by the Cultural Association of Polystylon and associations from neighboring villages or even from the city of Kavala.
