Vrysoula (Βρυσούλα) Ioannina
Vrysoula is a semi-mountainous village of Epirus in the regional unit of Ioannina at an altitude of 220 meters[1].
Geographical - historical information
Vrysoula is located towards the western borders of the prefecture with Thesprotia, in the valley of the Kalamas River (Thiamis) and is 41 km. west of Ioannina. Its old name was "Koutsi Filiates" and thus it is officially mentioned as a settlement in 1919 in the Government Gazette 184A-19/08/1919 to designate the seat of the homonymous community[2]. Its first inhabitants were from Northern Epirus who immigrated from the Koutsi region of present-day Albania in the early 19th century and from there the village's original name came[3]. It was renamed Vrysoula in 1928 with the Government Gazette 81A - 14/05/1928[2].
At the location "Vrysi Panagias" ceramic objects and traces of civilization dating back to the Hellenistic era have been found and at the top of the hill foundations of walls of ancient buildings can be seen[3]. According to the "Kallikratis" Program, it constitutes the local community of Vrysoula, which belongs to the municipal unit of Molossoi of the municipality of Zitsa and according to the 2011 census has a population of 78 residents[4].
