Vereniki (Βερενίκη) Ioannina

Vereniki or Ano Vereniki is a semi-mountainous village of Epirus in the Regional Unit of Ioannina.[1][2]

Geographical - historical data

Vereniki is located on the border with the Regional Unit of Thesprotia and is 56 km W.-SW. from the city of Ioannina, 44 km E.-NE. from Igoumenitsa, 49 km SW. (via Voutsara) from Eleousa (seat of the municipality). Culturally it is included in the villages of Douskara and is built north of the Paramythia Mountains[2] on the eastern side of the Arganos hill, at an altitude of 415 meters[3], near and northwest of Venterikos.

The Castle of Vereniki

Northwest of the village, at the location "Portes", there are remains of a Hellenistic acropolis wall, in the western part of which the gate is preserved in fairly good condition as well as ruins of buildings inside it.[4] The so-called Castle of Vereniki was one of the castles of the Molossians (4th century BC) and in 167 BC the high commissioner Lefkios Aemilios Paulos destroyed it when he conquered Epirus and razed 70 cities, most of which were Molossian.[2] At the location "Paliochori", between the ancient acropolis and the village, ancient coins and fragments of vases have been found. In the wider area there are caves of archaeological interest and ancient tombs.[5]

Administrative data

It was officially mentioned as a settlement, after the liberation of Epirus, under the name Verniko in 1919 in the Government Gazette 184A - 19/08/1919, to designate the seat of the newly founded community of the same name. In 1927, with the Government Gazette 76A - 02/05/1927, it was renamed Vereniki.[6] According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Venterikos, Kato Vereniki and Palaiochora, they constitute the local community of Vereniki of the municipal unit of Molossos, which falls under the municipality of Zitsa and according to the 2011 census, as a community it has 166 residents, while as a settlement it has 28.[7]
