Agia Sofia (Αγία Σοφία) Evoia
Agia Sofia is a semi-mountainous village in central Evia and the Regional Unit of Evoia.[1]
Geographical - historical information
Agia Sofia is located at the bottom of a verdant valley which is traversed by a stream, between the mountains Gerakovouni (north - altitude 1,227 m) and Kalpakovrachos (south - altitude 1,176 m) at an altitude of 260 meters[2]. It is approximately 41 km. N.-NE. from Chalkida and 27 km. N.-NE. from Psachna (municipality seat). The name of the village, according to local tradition, is due to the old Byzantine chapel of Agia Sofia in the neighboring Limnionas which is its port and beach.
It is officially referred to as a settlement, after the Revolution of 1821 and the incorporation of Evoia, in 1835 it was annexed to the then municipality of Dirfyon. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 245A - 16/08/1912, it was designated the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[3] According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Limnionas, Myloi and Pigadia, it constitutes the local community of Agia Sofia, which falls under the municipal unit of Messapia of the Municipality of Dirfyon - Messapia and according to the 2011 census has 168 residents.[4] The community is characterized as a rural mountainous settlement, with an area of 46.749 km² (2011).[5]
