Makrykapa is a settlement in the Municipality of Dirfyo - Messapia, Evia Prefecture.[1]
Geographical information

Makrykapa was created by the merger of the municipalities of Messapia and Dirfyes. It has a population of 804 inhabitants according to the 2011 census[2] and is located at an altitude of 170 meters[3]. It is 14 km. E.-NE. from Psachna and 30 km. NE. from Chalkida. The houses of the village are located on either side of the main road and thus the residential area extends in length rather than in width. A river runs through the center of the village and many plane trees grow around it.

Historical information

According to tradition, the village got its name in the following way: In the first years after the revolution of 1821, the first houses of the pastoral settlement were built by the shepherds of the settlements of Apogremnos (Attali) and Vavoula. The mountain shepherds wore long capes that were necessary for them in the winter when they grazed their sheep and goats in the surrounding mountains to protect themselves from the rains and snows. Their clothing with the long cape was a different outfit from that of the inhabitants of the plain and thus the settlement was named Makrykapa.

There is also a version that the name came from the surrounding mountains of Tanaida, higher up Arkoudia and Voidovouni which formed a large and long cape.

Next to Makrykapa is the settlement of Eftakonaka or Eptakonaka. The settlement was built after the revolution of '21 by shepherds, who came down from Vavoula and found huts in the area, which they inhabited. Because they found seven huts, they named the shepherd village Eptakonaka. In 1928, a silver vase was found in a Cycladic tomb[4] while a number of prehistoric flint tools have also been discovered[5]. Eptakonaka was abolished in 1981.[6]

It is officially mentioned as a settlement, after the Revolution of 1821 and the incorporation of Evia, in 1835, as being annexed to the then municipality of Lilantia and being written Makrykappa (with 2 "p"). In 1912, with the Government Gazette 245A - 16/08/1912, it was designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name. In 1940, its name was corrected to Makrykapa.[7]

Sights

Church of the Ascension

The church is located in Paliochori, next to a spring with abundant water, which once powered three watermills and today irrigates a large part of the plain. This ancient country church, in the style of a three-aisled basilica, may have been the catholicon of a Byzantine settlement, which after 1470 its inhabitants were forced to abandon and, for their safety, to climb up and live in the mountainous settlement of Vavoula.

Rakou Site

East of Makrykapa, a low hill rises. Prehistoric settlements were found at this point, probably from the early Bronze Age. A few prehistoric shells and flint fragments were also found.
The Bride's Rock

A lush gorge that took its name from a bride who was unhappy and fell from the top of the gorge. There you can go hiking and sit under the nearby plane trees with the crystal clear and gurgling water

Vavoula

Vavoula is the old settlement of Makrykapa. There is a chapel of Saints Constantine and Helen which is celebrated on May 21st and under the lush plane trees that surround it, locals and visitors revive the custom of the swing. According to this, whichever girl swings will find her partner next year.

Sports

The Makrykapas Athletic Club is a football team of the village. Its colors are blue and crimson and it was founded in 1971. It is based in the Makrykapas municipal stadium with a capacity of 205 seats.
