Stavros (until 1954 Vertoura[1]) is a village in Dirfyon - Messapia, in the Regional Unit of Evoia. According to the 2011 census, it has 348 inhabitants. It is built amphitheatrically at an altitude of 340 meters.[2] on the western slopes of Dirfi. It is 26 kilometers from Chalkida and 10 kilometers from Psachna. LARCO mines operate near the village.[3]

Historical information

The village is mentioned in an Ottoman tax register of 1474 under the name Vertera. According to the register, it had 4 houses.[4] The village was called Vertoura until 1954. According to one view, the old name of the village comes from the Turkish word for give-give the seal. The new name, according to the residents, is due to the fact that for a time, in order to drive out tuberculosis (tuberculosis), crosses had been erected on the road.[3]

In 1835, Vertoura was annexed to the municipality of Messapia. From 1841 to 1866, when the municipality of Messapia was abolished, it was under the Municipality of Chalkida, but with the Government Gazette 69A - 03/11/1866, the municipality of Messapia was re-established. With the abolition of municipalities in 1912, it was designated as the seat of a community of the same name. With the Kapodistrias plan, it was annexed to the municipality of Messapia and with the Kallikratis program, to the municipality of Dirfyon - Messapion.[5]
