Asprochori (Ασπροχώρι) Ioannina
Asprochori or Epano Asprohori is a mountainous village in Dodoni in the prefecture of Ioannina, Epirus, at an altitude of 800 meters.[1][2]
Geographical and historical information
Asprochori is located on the western slopes of Mount Tomaros or Olytsikas on sloping terrain. It is 31.5 km southwest of the city of Ioannina and 60 km east of Igoumenitsa[3]. In 1927, landslides occurred, as well as in the neighboring village of Bausioi (3 km north), forcing the residents of Asprochori and the wider area to abandon their homes and create the new settlement of Karyes near the dried-up Lake Lapsista[2].
The old name of the village was Gratsana and in 1919 a homonymous community was established with the settlement as its seat. Its name was changed to Asprochori in 1927[4]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Kato Asprohori, they form the local community of Asprochori, which belongs to the municipal unit of Selles of the Municipality of Dodoni and according to the 2011 census has no permanent population[5]. The community is characterized as a rural mountainous settlement, with an area of 16,007 km² (2011).[6]
