Domolessa (Δομολεσσά ) Ioannina
Domolessa is a small settlement in Epirus, in the Regional Unit of Ioannina.[1][2]
General information
Domolessa is located west of the Kourenta Mountains at an altitude of 340 meters, very close to the western banks of the Tyria River.[1] The village is approximately 41 km W-SW from Agia Kyriaki (the seat of the municipality), 41 km W-NW from Ioannina and 480 km from Athens. Culturally it belongs to the so-called villages of Lakka Souli[3] while administratively, together with Seniko and Mikrochori, it forms the local community of Seniko, which falls under the municipal unit of Selles of the Municipality of Dodoni and according to the 2011 census has a population of 33 people.[4][5]
Historical and notable facts
The village was referred to in Ottoman documents - as Efstathios Zagkas notes - as Tomolisa. He himself considers the name Slavic and not Albanian and believes that it comes from the word for the butterfly's cocoon, which is schematically like an "Ω" (capital letter). However, the village's street layout has exactly such a shape (it resembles an "Ω"). Finally, he notes that, as is generally known, many Albanian words have Slavic origin.
On a hill in the village there is the famous church of Agios Nikolaos, while at the exit of the village on a privately owned estate of the Zagkas, the church of the Virgin Mary. The church of Agios Nikolaos dates back to before the 19th century.
Also in the mid-1990s, on the initiative of E. Zaga the village was paved and in addition a state-of-the-art bridge was built over the Tyria River, which collapsed after a few years.
