Agios Thomas (Άγιος Θωμάς ) Aitoloakarnania
Agios Thomas is a lowland village in the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania. It falls under the Municipality of Iera Polis Messolonghi and according to the official census data of 2011, its population amounts to 541 inhabitants[1].
General information
Agios Thomas is built at an altitude of 50 meters in the northeast of Messolonghi, at a distance of approximately 3.5 kilometers from the city center. It was recognized as a settlement in 1951, the year in which it was annexed to the municipality of Iera Polis Messolonghi[2], having at that time a population of 626 inhabitants. Based on the recent administrative reform of the "Kallikratis" program, it constitutes, together with Agraforrachi, Metochi and Paspaliareika, the local community of Agios Thomas, of which it is the seat and belongs to the municipal unit of the Holy City of Messolonghi[1][3].
In Agios Thomas are the remains of the ancient city of Alikyrna. In fact, the Roman public baths (thermes) of Alikyrna are preserved in the area today, as well as a signpost from the period of the Roman emperor Trajan[4].
