The Metochi of Agios Thomas is a lowland village in the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania, located in the south of the prefecture, next to the Ionian Highway. It is 6 km northeast of Messolonghi and just 1 km northwest of Agios Thomas. As a settlement, it has been included in the Greek censuses since 1981 as part of the then community of Agios Thomas.[2] According to the Kallikrates program, together with Agios Thomas, Agraforrachi and Paspaliareika, they form the local community of Agios Thomas, which belongs to the municipal unit of Agios Thomas of the municipality of the Holy City of Messolonghi and according to the 2011 census has a population of 14 residents.[3]
History
To the northwest of the village is the ancient Aetolian city of Alikyrna, which dates back to the 4th century BC. which is only mentioned by name in ancient sources. Strabo mentions it as a commune and places it after Pleuron, while stating that it was 30 stadia away from ancient Calydon, also mentioning that it was a coastal city. Pliny, on the other hand, states that it was located inland[4]. Based on these sources, most scholars believe that ancient Alicyrna is located on the hill "Hilia Spitia" near the settlement of Agios Thomas, where the remains of a small fortified enclosure survive.[4] Archaeological excavations brought ancient Alicyrna to light during the construction of the Ionian Road.[4]
