Agios Symeon (Άγιος Συμεών) Aitoloakarnania

Agios Symeon is a lowland village of Aitoloakarnania at an altitude of 190 meters[2].

Geography - History

Agios Symeon is located at the foot of Mount Arakynthos (Zygos), northwest of Messolonghi at a distance of 8.5 km from the city center.[3] The name of the settlement comes from the historic monastery of Agios Symeon or Ai Symios, which was built in 1740 and is dedicated to Saint Symeon the Theodochos. It became known during the siege of Messolonghi because it was the meeting point of the besieged after their escape on April 10, 1826. However, due to the betrayal of their plan to Ibrahim, only a few of them managed to reach there and be saved. The monastery celebrates on February 3 of each year.[4] but for four days of the Holy Spirit and is one of the most important and most distinctive events of the wider area of Messolonghi. Since 2000, together with its surrounding area, it has been classified as a historical monument.[5]

Administrative

It was officially mentioned as a settlement in 1908 in the Government Gazette 28A-08/02/1908 to be annexed under the name Monastery of Saint Symeon to the then municipality of Messolonghi in the prefecture of Aetolia and Acarnania. In 1928 it was abolished, recognized again in 1951 under the name Saint Symeon and annexed to the municipality of the Holy City of Messolonghi.[6] According to the plan, Kallikrates belongs to the municipal community of Messolonghi, which falls under the municipal unit of the Holy City of Messolonghi of the municipality of the Holy City of Messolonghi and according to the 2011 census, it has 4 residents.[7]
