Koumaris (Κούμαρης) Achaia

Koumaris is a village in the municipality of Aigialeia, just outside Aigio. It is better known in everyday practice to the residents of the wider area as Koumari. The population of the settlement according to the 2011 census is 175 inhabitants[2]. It is located at an altitude of 175 meters.

History

During the Venetian occupation of the Peloponnese (1684-1718) and in the year 1700, the Venetian conquerors carried out a population census, with the forerunner (governor) Grimani. In the territorio (province) of Vostitsa (now Aigio/Aigialeia) of the census, a settlement named "Moumouri" is included, which historians identify with the present-day village of Koumari (now Koumaris). The settlement consisted of only five families with a total of 18 souls[3], which are distributed by gender and age as follows:

Men: From 1-16: 2, from 16-30: 2, from 30-40: 1, from 40-50: 2, from 50-60: 1, over 60: 2. Total: 10
Women: From 1-16: 2, from 16-30: 2, from 30-40: 1, from 40-50: 2, over 50: 1. Total: 8

Previously the settlement was called by its inhabitants as “Lapanaitika”[3]. Until 2011 it belonged to the now abolished municipality of Aigio.
The settlement of “Palioloukas”

In the census table, and immediately after “Moumouri” (Koumari), another settlement is recorded with the name “Luca” which historians translate to “Loucas”. However, since a village or settlement with this name does not exist in the province of Aigialeia, we can reasonably identify it with the current small settlement of “Palioloukas”[4], which is located within the boundaries of the village of Koumari and about four kilometers south of the village.

The census records only 4 families with a total of 14 souls, distributed as follows by gender and age:

Men: From 1-16: 2, from 16-30: 2, from 30-40: 2, from 40-50: 2, over 60: 1. Total: 8
Women: From 1-16: 2, from 30-40: 2, from 40-50: 1, over 50: 1. Total: 6

The inhabitants of the current settlement of Palioloukas, with a few families originating from Lapanagi Kalavryta, like the inhabitants of the village of Koumari[3], have moved since the middle of the last century to urban centers, mainly in Aigio and Athens, and return as raisin growers and olive producers depending on the seasons of the crops.
