Kouloura (Κουλούρα) Achaia
Kouloura is a lowland settlement in the Prefecture of Achaia, it is the seat of the homonymous Local Community, and according to the "Kallikratis Program" since 1/1/2011 it belongs to the Municipality of Aigialeia[2][3]. During the period 1997-2010, based on the "Kapodistrias Plan", it belonged to the former Municipality of Aigio as the seat of the homonymous former Municipal district[2][3][4][5].
With the dense construction in the area, the settlement is practically a district of the city of Aigio as it is located very close to it[6]. "Messinezi" is a settlement of Kouloura.
Name
According to local testimonies, the name of the settlement comes either from the old practice of "separating" the water into "kouloures", i.e. circles, in order to better manage the river water for the irrigation of crops or from the existence in the area of a large well, "kouloura", to irrigate the surrounding areas[4].
Demographic evolution
The demographic evolution of the settlement in the 21st century is as follows:
Year Population
2001 731[4][7]
2011 704[8]
